Frequently Asked Questions

How does psychotherapy or counseling help?

Talking about your thoughts and feelings with a supportive person makes you feel better. It can be very healing to voice your worries or talk about something that is heavy on your mind. Sometimes we need help that our family, friends and people around us cannot provide. When you need extra support, talking to someone with an outsider perspective can help. Therapy is different than the support your family and friends provide. Therapists are professionally-trained listeners who can help you get to the root of your problems, overcome emotional challenges, and make positive changes in your life.

What should I expect at my first session?

In your first session your therapist or counselor will likely ask you questions about you and your life. This allows them to make an initial assessment of your situation. Some questions asked of you may include: why you chose therapy, personal history of your current situation and current symptoms. It is important to be open and honest. Ask questions if you have them and be prepared to talk about the things weighing on your mind.

How long do I need counseling?

This depends on you and your individual situation. Therapy usually ends when you and your therapist have decided that you have met your goals. As long as you are continuing to progress in therapy, it is an option.

How do services intended for a child or adolescent differ from adult therapy?

The physical differenced between adolescents and adults are one reason why adolescents need treatment tailored to their age group. Their physical attributes, including their brains, have not finished developing.

How do I know if my insurance will cover services at Killian & Associates?

Most health plans have some coverage for counseling. One of our receptionists can verify if your services will be covered by insurance or not.
